#535: Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence

criterion535NAGISA OSHIMA

1983

Making plans was something I excelled at when I was young, following through with them was another story.  Something I always dreamed of doing and never accomplished was going away for a lengthy period of time to get away from my classically overbearing parents; instead, my reality took me closer to George Bailey in It’s A Wonderful Life instead.  At one point I was very much prepared to take my fortunes to Japan, which I am reminded of every time I watch Nagisa Oshima’s first English Language debut and the experience his main characters have in their first encounter with the land of the rising sun.
