#105: Spartacus

criterion105STANLEY KUBRICK

1960

Nothing like a Christian school education to make you enjoy a fully immoral life as an adult.  One of the key memories I have of that school was the time my “Bible/Guidance” teacher taught us to parse the media for its sinful influence by poring through the newspaper film ads and predicting which ones had filthy content.  The fact that one of them included the restored re-release of Stanley Kubrick’s masterful Spartacus tickled me even then, but watching it now, I wonder: is the movie actually filthy?  And does the fact that it eschews religion, unlike the giant epic movies of its day, make it a bad influence on a good Christian?  For this episode, I invited Sofia Stefou and Jeffrey Pedernera to share their own memories of discovering this great film.
