#019: Shock Corridor

criterion19SAMUEL FULLER

1963

I discovered that there was more to movies than just Steven Spielberg blockbusters and my world completely changed.  Don’t get me wrong, I love shopping mall entertainment and don’t look down on it, but the options opened up by movies made outside the mainstream studio system have enriched me as a moviegoer like no other.  I think of my first experiences going downtown to the movies by myself whenever I watch Samuel Fuller’s investigation of mental health in the sixties, and wonder if people discovered movies like Shock Corridor and The Naked Kiss and it changed things for them as well.
