#001: Grand Illusion

criterion1JEAN RENOIR

1937

My first episode!  Grand Illusion is a film that means a great deal to me, partly because of how great an example it is of Renoir’s talent, and partly because of how it displays his humanity.  For me, loving films is part of being humane, it involves wanting not just escapism but wanting to know more about the world outside your own experience.  Since this was my first time doing this show, this episode is also a great example of my still learning how to do this (hence the sound of computer keys clicking…I’ll get better about this, I swear!)
